Updates for casual employees
There has been recent updates to the definition of “casual employee” at a Federal level, but also at a State level in regards to entitlements.
In WA, for example, it’s important to remember that while casual employees are not entitled to paid annual leave or sick leave, they are entitled to long service leave when they reach the required period of continuous employment, just like any permanent employee. There are also other entitlements that apply to casual employees, such as bereavement leave and family & domestic violence leave.
We encourage those that employ casual staff to be up to date on the latest requirements and entitlement information, to ensure you are meeting your obligations as an employer.
If you have any queries in regards to your circumstances we suggest speaking with an industrial relations or HR expert.
The WA Department of Energy, Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety also provides useful information on this area, which can be found here: Casual employment.
